Multiple choice put to the test

For those of you that have been following this column for some time or have read our white paper on interactivity, this is ancient stuff and you may well skip this edition, but this topic really touches the fundamentals of my beliefs on what is good interactivity so please bear with me.

What is a multiple-choice exercise? The answer is pretty obvious: it is a question you answer by clicking one or more predefined assertions. This has been used for tests and exams for ages, and therefore I hear you say: multiple-choice exercises are for testing and can’t be used for anything else.

If you are saying this, you are excluding quite a powerful tool from your e-learning writer's toolbox because multiple choice exercises can easily be used as way of promoting your valuable content, especially since Mohive allows you to give textual feedback on answers submitted.

How do you learn?

If I set myself to teach you something, I rarely sit down, talk for twenty minutes, and then start to ask questions checking whether you have paid attention. I would probably be a more successful teacher if tried a method in the form of dialogue. The reason for this is obvious; you as the learner are forced to use your brain by active participation. This is the same thing that we try to do in e-learning under the mask of interactivity.

The easiest way of doing this is to utilize the multiple-choice template. Instead of telling your audience your content, you can rephrase this content into questions. Where you usually would tell the right course of action you can ask: 'What would be the right course of action?' Then you can put the justification in the feedback. If you do this, you will write much shorter and more engaging courses — maybe so engaging than you even can refrain from the concluding test?
