Anders Dolve is a HR Advisor, for the Organizational Development section of Statsbygg, the Norwegian government’s advisor for construction and property affairs. Here, he shares his experiences developing content with the Mohive eLPS.
1. How many people are typically involved in e-learning development?
Development of e-learning at Statsbygg is demand-based. Usually an individual or a group will present the HR unit with an idea for e-learning. Thus, anywhere from two to eight people are involved in the e-learning development process.
2. What processes do you use to enable them to work together effectively?
We have found a workshop setting gives the best results. Workshops offer both the idea originator and the HR representative a opportunity to work together to develop the course. They also allows for module testing, topic exploration and thorough conceptual understanding. After initial workshops, tasks and responsibilities are more easily divided.
3. How long have you been creating courses using Mohive?
Statsbygg has been developing courses with Mohive for over three years. I started working with Mohive shortly after I came to Statsbygg, That’s about 14 months ago.
4. What software did you use prior to using Mohive?
The organization did not have similar software solutions before we started working with Mohive.
5. What type of courses do you create?
I assist to create all kinds of courses including introductory courses for handling dangerous chemicals as well as time registration courses. In a group setting, I have also worked as a combined source/specialist on HR-related courses such as the introductory program for new employees.
6. And how long are the courses you develop?
Our policy is that the courses should not take more than 15-20 minutes to complete. The feedback we receive indicates that these courses are the most effective. Naturally the topic dictates to a large extent how long we can maintain user focus. The degree of interactivity is also strongly related to the dimensions of our courses.
7. How much time does an average course take to develop from when you start work to uploading into the LMS?
Interestingly, we don’t use an LMS so our e-learning modules are accessible through our intranet. Course development time varies considerably, depending on subject matter and priority.
8. How long does each stage in the process take to complete?
When an idea for a course is presented to us we usually have a pretty good idea if e-learning is the right fit or not. From this point on I estimate we use about 2 weeks planning and executing a workshop. Then, depending on the course, we add another two to four weeks for evaluation and improvement phase before the course is ready to use. We also use participant feedback to improve the course while in use: a process that is ongoing.
9. What aspect of the Mohive system do you find most helpful?
Timing text and objects in and out of a template allows for better space management and it keeps the participants focused. The feature lets you cut down on the number of templates used, which makes it easier for everybody.
10. Which Mohive templates do you find particularly effective for the type of course you develop and what features make them your preferred choice?
For most of our courses we prefer flexible information templates and classical MC templates. These allow us to convey information and participants get to test their knowledge on the subject.
11. What tip have you discovered that you would like to share with other Mohive users?
I love to bring small modules from Mohive into regular presentations, two or three multiple-choice templates in a presentation is a great way to get the crowd involved. It’s just a link away, and it certainly is effective in waking people up in the back row!
12. Is there any other feedback you would like to include?
Keep up the good work and continue to develop templates that give course creators more weapons of choice.
